Chapter one

The Heart of the Problem

In this video, Sarah Dusek delves into the importance of recognizing and addressing the heart of the problem that holds many women back: thinking too small. She shares her own journey of shifting from a limited mindset to embracing the possibilities of building something much bigger, offering insights on how to overcome these challenges and scale your business.

Chapter two

Solutions Require Failure

In this video, Sarah Dusek discusses the critical role that failure plays in finding successful solutions, sharing her own journey of pivoting through multiple business models before discovering the right formula for Under Canvas. She emphasizes the importance of embracing failure as a necessary step towards achieving product-market fit and ultimately scaling your business.

Chapter three

The Product is Also You

In this chapter, Sarah Dusek emphasizes the crucial understanding that when pitching to investors, it’s not just about the product or business idea—it’s about you as the entrepreneur. She discusses how investors place significant weight on the founder’s ability to execute and overcome challenges, highlighting the importance of believing in yourself, taking risks, and presenting a bold, confident vision for your business.

Chapter four

Market Size Supersized

In this chapter, Sarah Dusek explores the concept of market size and the importance of thinking big when assessing the potential of your business. She reflects on her own realization that Under Canvas had the potential to scale nationwide, encouraging entrepreneurs to embrace a larger vision and communicate the significant market opportunity their business represents to investors.

Chapter five

Revenue and the Metrics That Matter

This chapter addresses the critical importance of understanding and communicating the key financial metrics that investors are looking for. Sarah Dusek shares her initial struggles with the unfamiliar jargon and metrics in the investment world, highlighting the journey she took to master the financial language that matters most when pitching to investors. She emphasizes the power of knowing your numbers, as it not only helps in securing investment but also in making smarter business decisions as you grow and scale your company.

Chapter six

Traction and Proof of Concept

In this chapter, the focus is on the concept of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and its importance in the entrepreneurial journey. Sarah Dusek shares her experience of developing and refining Under Canvas, emphasizing that it’s more important to get a product into the market, even if it’s not perfect, than to wait for perfection. She highlights the value of learning from customer feedback and iterating as you go, encouraging entrepreneurs to embrace the process of continuous improvement while scaling their business.

Chapter seven

The Competition

In this chapter, Sarah Dusek explores the role of competition in the entrepreneurial journey, recounting her own experience of learning about a competitor entering her market space. Initially, she felt fear and concern about losing her customer base, but this competition ultimately fueled her motivation to raise capital and improve her product. She emphasizes the importance of embracing competition as a catalyst for growth, pushing entrepreneurs to innovate and refine their offerings, while also considering how competition can help build an entire industry.

Chapter eight

Teams for Tomorrow

In this chapter, the focus shifts to the importance of building the right team to support your business growth. Sarah Dusek reflects on her journey from hiring helpers to realizing the need for experts who could bring in the skills and knowledge she lacked. She emphasizes the importance of assembling a high-performing team that can evolve with the business, making tough decisions when necessary, and always thinking ahead to the next phase of growth.

Chapter nine

Asking for Funding and Getting It

Sarah Dusek shares her experience of raising capital and the pivotal role it played in scaling her business. After years of navigating the investment landscape, she highlights how hiring a broker transformed the process, allowing her to attract the right investors and secure both equity and debt financing. Sarah also addresses the fear many women have about taking on debt, emphasizing the importance of being strategic with capital to drive growth and create value in the business.

Chapter ten

The World is Waiting For You

Sarah Dusek shares her journey to becoming a venture capitalist, driven by her experiences of not being seen or taken seriously during her fundraising efforts. She reflects on the sexism and bias she encountered, which ultimately inspired her to create the supportive investment environment she wished she had. Sarah emphasizes the importance of women having economic power to drive change and build a more equal world, encouraging women to take their place at the table and be the builders of a better future.
